Online Casino Basics – 3 Card Poker

3 Card Poker, a game incredibly popular both in online and land casinos, is actually a combination of two games – the first being Pair Plus and the second Ante and Play – rolled into one. Players are able to bet either on just one or on both games for each hand.

The rules of this 3-card game are easy to remember. In Pair Plus, the player places his bet on the corresponding field, then clicks Deal and waits to have his cards dealt to him. Here, the dealer’s hand will be disregarded, and the player cannot discard or raise any of his cards. His hand either will win or lose, it’s as simple as that.

A winning hand in Pair Plus will pay out at odds of 40:1 for a Straight Flush, 30:1 for Three of a Kind, 6:1 for a Straight, 4:1 for a flush. Any pair will pay out at even money.

The second game, Ante and Play, will be a little more complicated, but (as most players will agree), also the most entertaining out of the two games. Bets have to be placed onto the Ante field. After the deal, the player then examines his cards and takes one of two options. One option is to fold the hand (however, if he has a bet placed on Pair Plus as well and holds a pair which would pay out, this would be an unwise move), which will lose the Ante bet.  The other option is to Call, or Play. If the player calls, he is then required to place a bet equalling the amount of his Ante bet onto the Bet field, thus effectively paying to see the 3 cards the dealer holds. The dealer has to hold either a Queen or a higher card in order to qualify. Anything lower, and he fails to qualify, and the player’s Ante bet wins at evens, with the Call bet being returned. Should the dealer qualify, Ante and Play wagers pay out as follows: If the player beats the dealer, both Ante and Play (or Call) bets are paid out at even money. The dealer winning will lose both bets. In case of a tied hand, both bets will be returned to the player (known as a push).

The Ante bet also has a bonus independent from the hand of the dealer – a Straight will pay out the Ante bet at even money, Three of a Kind will pay at odds of 4:1 and a Straight Flush will pay at 5:1.

It should be noted that Aces may be counted as high or low straight and, as opposed to rules in regular Poker games, a Straight will beat a flush, as it is more difficult to create a Straight with three card hands.
